BioAsphalt – The Way Forward

Category:

BioAsphalt The Way Forward Do you know almost anything can be made out of Lignin? Let it be Roads then!

Traditional Roads are fossil-fuel based, why should we not move forward to a biobased lignin asphalt road ? Today, researchers all over the world trying out ways to produce a more sustainable asphalt product through different materials. This is what happened first in Netherlands to produce BioAsphalt replacing Bitumen.

Kraft Lignin

Lignin is the second most abundant renewable biopolymer found in nature. The impressive properties of lignin, such as its high abundance, low weight, environmentally friendliness and its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and biodegradable nature, along with its CO2 neutrality and reinforcing capability, make it an ideal candidate for the development of novel polymer composite materials. Therefore, lignin has gained the attention of researchers as a raw material for the synthesis of value-added products of commercial importance. Kraft lignin is a highly pure containing higher amount of phenolic hydroxyl groups.

Making the Roads Green

Fossil based Bitumen is the traditional binder in asphalt, but today this can be replaced by Kraft Lignin. The binding properties of lignin in asphalt are extensively tested in the lab and the results look very good. Lignin in asphalt is also already used for the construction of roads and they last in good condition.

Traditional hot mix asphalt results in high carbon emissions and is a disaster to the environment, which is undesirable to the development of a low-carbon economy. Our Lignin requires less energy than traditional asphalt mixing temperature, thereby reducing emissions. Being a zero PAH environmentally friendly binder, our Lignin is leading to a sustainable & Eco-friendly approach to improve carbon footprint in today’s world.

We are able to guide industries with the correct recipe to implement the green revolution.
