After several years of unprecedented challenges, our first Big Debate on Day One will bring together a panel of industry experts to consider the current situation and what the future might hold?

Elaine McGavin is a Regulatory Affairs Specialist at the Chemical Business Association.  She has more than 20 years’ experience within the chemical industry and has worked in various sectors including catalysis, R&D and supply chain.   In her current role she supports members with regulatory and sustainability issues and is a Dangerous Goods Safety advisor (DGSA).

 Bio: Kate is the Chair of the Chemical Business Association (CBA) and Managing Director of  Dakram Materials Ltd which she founded in 2003 to import, export, and distribute metal-based chemicals.

Kate studied Materials Sciences with Management at Brunel University, London, graduating with a first-class honours degree.

A fluent French speaker, her 30-year career in the industry began as a Research then Marketing Assistant with ICI Films.  Kate joined the Rare Earths Division of Meldform Metals Limited becoming the European Sales Manager and then Business Manager of its Germanium division with product, planning, and profit responsibility for this international business.

Alastair Gardner

Alastair Gardner

Trade Specialist, Chemicals Export & Investment Team - Department for International Trade

Alastair trained as a chemist and worked in various R&D and product development roles with DuPont, specialising in the formulation and application of light sensitive thin film coatings for lithographic printing plates, before exporting his skills to China, where he commissioned and ran the production and QC functions for a Chinese printing plate manufacturing company. A chartered member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, he is passionate about the industry and its benefits to society.

Alastair has worked in International Trade Promotion for nearly 20 years, initially with China-Britain Business Council, then with the Department for International Trade, when the Department was known as UK Trade & Investment. Working as an international trade adviser in the Yorkshire & Humber region, he led on the chemicals and related sectors in the region, maintaining close links with the sector team in London, colleagues overseas and external stakeholders while working with companies to help maintain and grow exports. In his role as DIT Trade Specialist for the Chemicals sector, Alastair  promotes and supports the UK’s world class chemicals supply chain on a global stage.
