Flow Chemistry

While there are good reasons for both batch and flow processes, flow chemistry is especially powerful when it comes to continuous and reproducible results.

The higher heat transfer allows for significantly better process control and therefore higher yields and selectivity. The small volume also allows reaction conditions to be achieved that would be impossible or very dangerous in a stirred tank. By coupling several syntheses of the process, users can reuse intermediates directly. The combination of flow reactors with precise automation opens up flexible and predictable scale-up options.

Recent advances in laboratory automation and analytical instrumentation have created new opportunities to accelerate reaction development, particularly in flow chemistry. In a newly published application note, we join forces with Magritek to present a self-optimizing microreaction system. In this note, we combine the intelligent process control of our LabManager and LabVision automation tools with real-time analytics in the form of the Spinsolve Ultra benchtop NMR and an Ehrfeld micro-reaction system. We then used this system to optimize a Knoevenagel condensation step by step while continuously monitoring and adjusting the reaction conditions.

The result:

- Automated self-optimization of Knoevenagel condensation with Bayesian optimization
- The system iteratively determines reaction parameters with ever-increasing yields without human intervention.
- Demonstration of a fully automated reactor system that optimizes target parameters with minimal effort
