PANEL SESSION:

Designing, Scaling-up and Troubleshooting Mixing Processes

An overview of the key considerations and common methods to design, scale-up (and down) and troubleshoot mixing processes. This includes the transfer of specific processes between different manufacturing facilities and methods, and establishing the potential for transferring batch or semi-batch process to continuous operation.

1. Background knowledge on process and controlling phenomena. The critical starting point, and too frequently ignored or under-considered.
2. Correlation and mechanistic models. Awareness and application of these models, and consideration of their safe application under conditions outside where they were developed
3. Use of mixing specific software. Software tools have the potential to significantly speed up calculations, but also they can hide the background to calculations and be easy to miss-apply. They also do not factor in or give guidance on any uncertainties in their application or confidence intervals in the results.
4. CFD and other more complex modelling tools
