PANEL SESSION:

The new PMT/vPvM hazard classes – trouble brewing for industry and regulators alike?

The new hazard classes for persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) and very persistent, very mobile (vPvM) substances are now in force under the EU CLP regulation, and proposed as criteria for identifying substances of very high concern (SVHC) as part of the upcoming revision of EU REACH. They are also already included in various pieces of downstream legislation in the EU, and under discussion at UN GHS level. Although a relatively new concept, PMT/vPvM is therefore already highly relevant. But what are the implications of these new hazard classes for existing chemicals on the market, and what is the experience of trying to implement them? In this presentation, we will explore these aspects and discuss what the implementation of the PMT/vPvM hazard classes is likely to look like in the years ahead. We will discuss the requirements for assessing substances and mixtures, including some of the less well-known challenges related to data availability, testing and assessment. We will also look at things from the regulator’s perspective, including on further testing requests, grouping, and attempt to provide an outlook on the evolving policy situation. Attendees can expect to be brought up to speed on the requirements for assessing their substances and mixtures according to the new PMT/vPvM hazard classes, and to gain valuable insights and understanding of the broader challenges and implications of these regulatory developments for their business.
