Samotics launches rising-main burst detection for UK water networks

Samotics has introduced a new capability within its SAM4 condition-monitoring platform to help water companies identify burst rising mains earlier. Developed in collaboration with Yorkshire Water and Southern Water, the solution uses electrical signature analysis (ESA) and AI to continuously monitor the current and voltage drawn by pumps and motors from the motor control centre.
 
Rising mains are pressurised wastewater pipes that are difficult to monitor, meaning bursts may otherwise go unnoticed until wastewater reaches the surface. By detecting changes in a pump’s electrical signature, SAM4 can provide an early warning of a likely burst, enabling control-room teams to investigate and deploy resources sooner.
 

The new model was developed and validated using confirmed burst data from Yorkshire Water and Southern Water networks since 2024. Already available on the SAM4 platform, it aims to reduce pollution risk, repair costs and the wider operational impact of failures across hard-to-monitor wastewater assets.
