PANEL SESSION:

Sustainability in the materials and chemicals sector from Cradle to Gate to Grave – industry case studies

Overview

Sustainability demands that the needs of the present be met without compromising the future. One of the biggest challenges for most companies is the transparent and systematic application of sustainability to product design and development. For Chemicals and Materials, this is particularly complex in the light of the wide variation in raw materials, processes, applications and end of life destinations of their products.

Our panel will present case studies based upon their specific approaches to sustainability which will demonstrate the range and complexity of considerations within the sector. This will be related to Life Cycle Assessment, which although invaluable for science-based comparisons, can also offer scope for differing interpretations.

The Panel

Chair : Lorraine Ferris, Henry Royce Institute, University of Manchester

Panellists:

  • Tony Heslop, EMEA Regional Lead Sustainability, BASF
  • John Williams, CTO, Aquapak Polymers
  • Richard Lock, Chief Operating Officer and MD, Holiferm
  • Josie Lefevre, Head of Green Feather Innovations, Thomas Swan & Co Ltd

Session format

Lorraine Ferris will briefly introduce the session and its objectives.

Each panellist will make a short presentation as follows:

  • Tony Heslop, BASF – The application of LCA, Cradle to Gate to Grave
  • John William, Aquapak Polymers  – Using Innovative Polymers to Deliver the Circular Economy
  • Richard Lock, Holiferm –  Biosurfactants revolutionising green sustainable surfactants
  • Josie Lefevre, Thomas Swan – A Sustainability Journey in Practice

This will be followed by a panel discussion in which we will explore how the panellists’ experiences can be applied to sustainable product design and development, with questions and participation from the audience.
