      Efficient filtration in reaction chemistry

Accurate sampling is essential in reaction screening to ensure reproducible and reliable data. The new quartz frits for ReactALL improve sample integrity by filtering out heterogeneous particles without disturbing the reaction. Testing the frits with different reactants revealed that, in addition to preserving homogeneous reactants, they also reduced heterogeneous components, ensuring cleaner and more consistent results. This automated approach offers improved accuracy and operational simplicity over manual filtration, making it essential in lab workflows. [read the case studies on the link below]

Eight Reactions. One Platform. Faster Discovery at Heriot-Watt

The Donnelly Research Group, Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, UK) published a compelling case study highlighting significant operational and scientific advantages when performing parallel inert chemistry using the DrySyn OCTO 8-position Reaction Station, a compact benchtop synthesis platform. Parallel reaction screening lies at the heart of modern synthetic chemistry, allowing researchers to explore reaction conditions, catalysts and atmospheres simultaneously with high precision. Traditionally, achieving this level of control has required multiple hotplates, gas manifolds and bespoke glassware setups. By contrast, the DrySyn OCTO integrates key reaction parameters including stirring, heating, inert atmosphere control and reflux into a single, space-efficient platform designed to simplify complexity without sacrificing performance. In its impartial evaluation, the Donnelly Group implemented the DrySyn OCTO to conduct multiple inert reactions in parallel under tightly controlled and repeatable conditions, delivering notable improvements in experimental workflow and screening throughput. The system enables eight concurrent reactions in standard 5–6 mL glass tubes with gas-tight closures, facilitating inert atmosphere chemistry without the operational challenges associated with traditional multi-station gas manifolds. Researchers reported improved ease of use, enhanced reproducibility and a more streamlined approach to condition screening, particularly valuable in exploratory synthesis and catalyst development. Dr Liam Donnelly, leader of the Donnelly Group, explained: “We are leveraging the DrySyn OCTO parallel synthesis reactor to screen catalysts and reaction conditions for polymer backbone modification, enabling the design of new degradable polymers. This medium-throughput approach allows us to run multiple reactions simultaneously under precisely controlled conditions, dramatically reducing the time and resources needed to identify optimal pathways.”

    3. Eliminating Seal Failures in Slurry Applications with Vulcassette®

Eliminating Seal Failures in Slurry Applications with Vulcassette®

Vulcan Seals’ custom design provided a groundbreaking solution for a global manufacturer facing severe slurry substance challenges on positive displacement pumps. This innovation significantly reduced clogging, pump downtime, and maintenance costs while enhancing overall system reliability. Case Study Overview A multinational manufacturer faced persistent issues with traditional cartridge mechanical seal designs that employed multi-spring technology on positive displacement pumps. The application involved a challenging slurry substance of fine, soft, sticky particles interspersed with cellulose-based fibres. As a result, leakage occurred shortly after installation, leading to: - Frequent pump downtime issues - Increased maintenance costs - Inefficiency in sealing performance The Vulcan Seals Approach Our technical engineering department introduced the Vulcassette solution, a groundbreaking design that completely removed the springs used to energise the primary seal surfaces. You can find the entire case study on our website blog post.

    5. Enhancing Mechanical Seal Reliability in a High-Pressure Marine Application

Enhancing Mechanical Seal Reliability in a High-Pressure Marine Application

By employing Vulcan Seals‘ optimised, low-wear sealing solution, a marine equipment manufacturer successfully resolved recurring electrical reliability issues, reduced failures, maintenance costs, and enhanced overall equipment performance without the necessity for significant modifications. Case Study Overview A leading marine equipment manufacturer, specialising in high-performance propulsion and fluid handling systems, was facing persistent electrical reliability issues with the mechanical seals in an unusual, high-pressure, deep-sea marine application. With external pressure exceeding internal pressure, the original European-designed mechanical seal, while suited for short axial length installations, struggled to maintain performance under these demanding conditions, an issue that resulting in: - Short working height limitations - High external pressure impact - Inadequate performance in variable marine conditions The Vulcan Seals Approach The Vulcan Seals engineering experts conducted an in-depth analysis of the application, including a review of used mechanical seals from the system. This evaluation identified opportunities for minor modifications to the mechanical seal chamber, which would enable the use of Vulcan Seals’ shortest-length parallel spring diaphragm bellows mechanical seals. Foeth also fastest-growing internationally!

Every year, the Financieel Dagblad appoints the Dutch companies with the fastest growth as FD Gazelle. We have achieved this title in the years 2020 to 2023, so three years in a row already! In addition, the Financieel Dagblad appoints the Dutch companies that also grow the fastest on an international scale, i.e. the real frontrunners. Foeth is one of the 53 companies allowed to call themselves International Gazelles, and we are proud of it! Foeth CEO Erik Saat attended the presentation of the trophies, where the outright winner was also announced. We unfortunately did not become this, but it gives us a nice aspiration for next year. In any case, we are happy to still be one of the fastest-growing companies after more than 110 years in business, and that we can also live up to our mission ("reuse to reduce") internationally!
